Common Problems & Fixes
3-Beat Riff Walk (Slam, Flam, Slurp, Third) - Problems: Students fail to separate the first and second sound of the riff.
The final toe sound happens too early.
Solutions: To separate the first two sounds in a riff, you can add a little bit of pressure to the first sound of the riff and then release it suddenly when going to the second sound. You can also adjust the angle of your foot so that the toe tap hits the floor at a 45 degree angle for the first sound of the riff. Finally, you can alter the location of the first sound of the riff - moving it backwards a bit usually helps to separate the riff sounds. Finally, you can approach the riff as a touch scuff instead of a brush scuff.
To fix an early final toe sound, lift the toe higher into the air before dropping it down.
