Common Problems & Fixes

Step Heel Turn - Problems: Students bounce which throws off their rhythm at faster speeds.

Some students do not make a full rotation and others may over-rotate.

Students don’t spot well.

Solutions: To fix the bouncing, have your students bend their knees and stay level or have them imagine there is a metal spike above their head.

To make a full rotation, keep the body pulled up straight (versus leaning forward), to prevent over-rotation also make sure the body is pulled up straight (versus leaning back). Make sure each step is directly in line with the direction they are traveling (you can have them pause and check each time until they get the hang of it).

To fix poor spotting, make sure to tell the students to focus their eyes on a specific item (ideally no bigger than a hand) and to refocus their eyes each time they spot so the item they are spotting is clear and not blurry.
